Indy ‘Pop Con’ Welcomes Big Names to Indiana Convention Center

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to attend the Indiana Comic Con in Indianapolis. It was one of the best experiences of my life. Not only did I dress up in a full Star Trek: The Next Generation uniform, but I also got to meet Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander William Riker in the show and subsequent movies. He was so cool, as were all the other cosplayers, artists, and vendors I met throughout the weekend.

Indiana Comic Con is usually held in early spring, but unfortunately, I was in the process of moving back to Indiana during that time, so I missed out on this year's festivities. Luckily, there is another convention held every year not long after, and this one also brings its a-game. Let's take a look at Indy Pop Con.

Indy Pop Con is happening April 26–28, 2024, at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis. This enromous convention celebrates all aspects of pop culture, so it's not just about space movies and comic books. According to the Pop Con website, the convention was founded for the fans by the fans, creating a weekend where everyone can nerd out over just about any popular interest. This year's event is bringing in some big names, and I'm personally very excited about all of them. Here are a few on the list:

ANDY SERKIS
Dates: Saturday & Sunday

Andy Serkis is pretty much the Swiss Army Knife of popular movies. He's been in Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes, some Marvel stuff, Star Wars, and even played Alfred Pennyworth in the latest Batman film simply titled The Batman.

If you're a fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, then you definitely know the name Elijah Wood. He is best known for playing Frodo Baggins in the popular film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic novels.

JIM CUMMINGS
Dates: Friday, Saturday & Sunday

While you may not know his face, you most certainly have heard his voice. Jim Cummings is a longtime voice actor who has taken on over 400 roles. He is most famous for voicing Disney characters like Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, and Darkwing Duck.

DEAN NORRIS
Dates: Saturday & Sunday

Dean Norris, a South Bend, Indiana, native, has had several roles over his career but is perhaps most known for his portrayal of DEA agent Hank Schrader in the iconic TV drama known as Breaking Bad. I loved this show and binge-watched all five seasons within a month upon running across it on Netflix. Norris's co-stars, Raymond Cruz and RJ Mitte, will also be in attendance at Indy Pop Con.

As a longtime fan of the hit BBC series Doctor Who, I couldn't be more excited about this next guest. John Barrowman is a Scottish-American actor who played Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who along with the spin-off series, Torchwood. Barrowman also made regular appearances on The Flash, Arrow, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

Several other popular TV and movie stars will also be attending the convention, along with an assortment of vendors and cosplayers. If you're on the fence about going because you don't have foam armor and an unreasonably expensive toy lightsaber handy, it's no big deal. Don't feel like you have to dress up to have a good time. I'll be honest, dressing up is fun, but I was drenched in sweat my last go around, so I'll be making this trip in a t-shirt and jeans.
