Indiana Home to Two of the Most Rat-Infested Cities in America
Two Indiana cities made the list of the cities in America most infested with rats. Care to guess which ones?
Orkin just released its list of the Top 50 Rattiest Cities in the U.S. They ranked metro regions by the number of new rodent treatments performed from August 20, 2024, to August 21, 2025. This ranking includes both residential and commercial pest control treatments. According to Orkin, Mice and rats are a serious concern to the millions of homeowners who deal with infestations each fall. As the weather cools, rodents seek warm shelter and food sources. They enter and invade your piping and even chew through your walls. Rats and mice often chew through wiring in homes, increasing the risk of fires. Not only are they disgusting critters, but they can also cause significant damage.
For the first time in a decade, Chicago did not take home the number one spot on this list. This year, Los Angeles took the crown of the most rat-infested city in America. However, there was one Indiana city that unfortunately made this list.

So you are probably wondering which cities in Indiana made that list, right? South Bend, which did not make the list in 2024, ranked as the 42nd most rat-infested city in America. However, another Indiana city found itself ranked much higher on Orkin's list. In fact, this city was ranked the 15th most rat-infested city in America for the past two years. However, in 2025, that city, Indianapolis, moved up to number 14. For the second year in a row, coming in at number 15 is Indianapolis. Coincidentally, Indianapolis and South Bend also made Orkin's list of the worst cities for bed bugs, and Indianapolis was among Orkin's worst cities for mosquitoes in 2025.
So, if you find yourself visiting or living in either of these Indiana cities, be sure to look out for rats. Orkin also mentioned a few common signs that you might have a rat problem, as well as some tips to help keep these rodents out. You can see the full list and learn more by clicking here.
