It is once again cold and flu season and beyond getting a flu shot, what can you do to cut down your risk of getting a cold or the flu. It is estimated that 15-60 million Americans or 5-20 percent of the population will contract the flu this year. Prevention could be as simple as practicing good hygiene and good manners according to a new study from Lysol and the Global Hygiene Council. Personality traits can also play a part, for example, people who are the nervous and conscientious types report 10 percent fewer colds than others. Those with good manners like covering their mouths when sneezing, are more than twice as likely as others to enjoy good health.

Hygiene habits also varied by profession with homemakers showing the highest level of personal hygiene and students showing the worst. Those habits included how often people wash their hands, clean household surfaces and have an established house cleaning routine.

One interesting fact that came from the study is that while Americans report high levels of frequent hand washing, our rank for household hygiene fell into the bottom half against other countries. Bottom line, if you want to stay healthy, wash your hands, cover your mouth and
