Cats Make Great Pest Control
Cats not only make adorable fluffy companions, they can also help keep your home free of mice and other rodents. According to CommandPestControl.com cats are great at helping keep mice and rodents at bay:
There are a number of reasons to use cats as pest control. First off, cats often will find rodents before humans ever do.
This is because of their refined sense of smell, as well as their ability to hear at higher frequencies such as that of squeaky mice.
Barn Cats are a Great Way to Keep Mice Out of Your Barn
The Vanderburgh Humane Society offers a really unique program to help keep your barns and stables pest-free while finding a safe home for feral or semiferal cats. VHS offers the barn cat program with free adoption fees, but donations are welcome if you'd like! VHS currently has two barn cats up for adoption, with two more coming. Here's what their Facebook post said:
Do you have a barn or stable that needs some chemical-free pest control? Did you know that VHS offers a barn cat program? We currently have TWO barn cats available – with 2 more on the way! Please contact adoptions@vhslifesaver.org for more information. You can also learn more about this program on our website: https://www.vhslifesaver.org/barncats
What do you need to do in return for the barn cats?
Our barn cat adoption contract only asks that you provide the following for the cats' whole lives:
- daily food
- fresh water (including in winter)
- shelter from the elements (inside the barn, warehouse, etc.) in a rural setting (we will not adopt cats to simply be outdoors in busy or high-traffic neighborhoods)
- veterinary care for them if they are ever injured
The VHS also recommends a 14-day period to help your new barn cat stick to the area, you can check out more about that, here.
