I love a mascot. Energetic, funny, and usually can do an impressive trick or two. At the very least, you can count on them to be adorable and friendly! Last year, in an internet trend that made everyone verklempt, colleges across the country revealed the identities of their graduating mascots.

These big plushy cheerleaders hype up school spirit in a way no one else can. Today, Ivy Tech in Evansville, Indiana, had a pep rally on campus for a very special announcement. They now have a mascot of their very own! Meet Rex!

The student body voted on several options, but according to the press release, "Rex is also a way that Ivy Tech is paying tribute to the history of the main campus, which was formerly Rex Mundi High School from 1958 to 1972. Rex Mundi’s mascot was the monarch. A large group of Rex Mundi alumni were at the event, welcoming the new mascot."

"Dona Hall, a Rex Mundi grad, bestowed Rex’s crown upon his head during the ceremony."

My friend, Rebecca McQueen-Ruark, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, helped lead the effort with Michael McComas to bring this mascot to life. She said, "This has been about a year and a half in the making, and it truly took a great team effort to get here. What started as an idea turned into something really special because of the energy, creativity, and collaboration from so many people across campus."

Ivy Tech student Gracie Defur helped design Rex. A visual communications major, she drew sketches of Rex that were used in the digital design process for the king himself, which is what "Rex" actually means in Latin. "We know Ivy Tech Evansville is the king of the 19 Ivy Tech campuses." Becca shared. So that fits perfectly!

She went on to say, "Honestly, one of the coolest parts of all of this is knowing we’re starting a tradition that will live on long after us. Big thanks to everyone who helped make this such a great day. Can’t wait to see Rex around the campus and community."
If you see Rex out and about doing his thing, be sure to stop and say "hi!" I heard he really likes to make new friends!
