This week, I learned that in some states, kids as young as 14 can get a driver's permit. I was flabbergasted. I let my teenager drive the Kubota around the neighborhood some, but I can't imagine her behind the wheel right now. To be fair, the dad I spoke to in Iowa said it's a special permit that only allows his 14 year old to drive to and from school. That might not be a terrible way to introduce new drivers to the road. School is usually within a couple miles and if you can navigate that comfortably, you can gain confidence to drive in more difficult situations.

Watching Your Teen Grow Up Is Bittersweet

My daughter isn't quite there yet, but I'd be lying if I said I haven't been thinking about her future that's rapidly approaching. Driving. First job. Eventually off to college. Excuse me, I need to go cry for a moment...

Okay, I'm back.

Should Teens Get a Job in High School?

Now I have to admit, driving scares me, yes, but so does her entering the workforce at a young age. I know getting a little part-time job fosters responsibility and work ethic, but I also want her to stay a kid for as long as possible. She has the rest of her life to work. I want her to enjoy this time of freedom. And let's be honest, there are a lot of unsavory adults out there who would teach her life lessons she's not ready for. Heck, my first serving job was a whole education in and of itself.

But it's important that teens start to grow their skill sets and work ethic. Colleges and potential employers value experience, communication, and teamwork skills. It sets them apart from other candidates.
