Evansville Is Getting a New Thrift Store That Will Help Save Homeless Pets
Thrift shopping is all the rage these days. When I was a kid, you didn't want to be caught dead in a consignment or thrift store. Now it's hip and cool to support sustainability, save money, and shop local. Just this week, I found a brand new pair of Aldo shoes for my husband for just $7! That's the kind of find that keeps me coming back.
These days, thrifting feels more like a treasure hunt. Sure, the rise of resellers means there's a little more competition, but we also live in a world of overconsumption. We have an endless supply of inexpensive things, and eventually, all of it has to go somewhere. That's one reason thrift stores are more important than ever.
Evansville Has Plenty of Great Thrift Stores
Many local nonprofits have discovered just how much of a difference a thrift store can make to their mission. Here in Evansville, shoppers already have several great options, including Goodwill Industries, the Evansville Christian Life Center Thrift Store, the World Wide Missions Store, Habitat ReStore, Petunia's Resale, and Happy Tails Resale.
Now, another thrift store is joining the list, and it's one animal lovers will definitely want to support.
It Takes a Village Is Opening Gemma's Resell for Rescue
The team at It Takes a Village has hosted huge annual garage sales for years to help raise money for homeless pets. As they move into their new building, they'll finally have room for an actual store.
Gemma's Resell for Rescue will soon open at 5115 Oak Grove Road in Evansville.
The rescue is asking the community to help stock the shelves by donating gently used items that can be resold to support the animals in their care.
They are looking for donations including:
- Home décor
- Kitchen items
- Pet supplies
- Toys
- Books
- Other gently used household items
Every donation helps provide food, medical care, shelter, and hope for homeless dogs and cats.
The first donation drop-off day is Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 9 a.m. to noon at 5115 Oak Grove Road. This will be the only donation drop-off opportunity for the resale shop that week.
The rescue says to watch for details about the grand opening in the coming weeks.
Who Was Gemma?
If you're wondering about the name, Gemma has a special place in the hearts of everyone at It Takes a Village.
Gemma spent years at the rescue waiting for someone to give her a forever home. After countless requests for a foster or permanent family, It Takes a Village Executive Director Tangila Smith eventually decided to take Gemma home herself, where she remained for the rest of her life.
Gemma passed away in 2024, but her story continues to represent the hope that every rescue animal deserves. Naming the thrift store in her honor is a fitting tribute, and every purchase or donation will help give more homeless pets the same chance at a happy ending.
