A new grassroots movement is taking shape on Facebook, called MinutesMatter 24/7 Emergency Vet Advocates for Evansville. It was created in response to something that has been quietly affecting families across the area.

The local 24/7 emergency veterinary clinic in Evansville has been forced to cut its hours because of staffing shortages. For a community this size, losing around-the-clock emergency care has already created dangerous and heartbreaking situations.

Why Evansville Losing 24 7 Emergency Care Hits So Hard

When pets experience seizures, trauma, poisoning, collapse, or sudden respiratory distress in the middle of the night, there is often nowhere local to turn. Families have rushed to the clinic only to find the doors locked. In those moments, the nearest open emergency facilities are more than two hours away in cities like Louisville, Nashville, or Indianapolis. When an animal is suffering from a time-sensitive medical emergency, that kind of drive can be devastating or fatal.

What Happens When The Closest Open ER Is Two Hours Away

I have seen the stories from people who did everything right. They recognized an emergency, they acted quickly, and they headed straight to the place that used to be the safety net for this region. Instead, they were met with an empty parking lot and no options nearby. It is a nightmare scenario, and it could happen to any one of us.

A Personal Story That Shows Why Minutes Matter

I know how terrifying those moments can be. In April 2019, my beloved cat Sophe collapsed at four in the morning. She was alert but unable to move. I wrapped her in a blanket, rushed her to the emergency vet, and within minutes of arriving, I had to make the painful decision to let her go. Even with immediate care just minutes away, it was one of the hardest moments of my life. I cannot imagine facing that same goodbye while also being forced to drive hours away with her suffering in my arms.

This is why the new advocacy group matters.

How MinutesMatter And Paw Street Are Building Momentum

The group was created by a resident named Justin, whose message has resonated deeply across the community. His belief is simple and powerful. Our pets deserve emergency care that is available when they need it. No family should ever lose a pet because help was not there in time. That belief has turned into action. The group has begun speaking with local leaders, connecting with media outlets, and collecting stories from families who have faced after-hours emergencies with nowhere to go.

This effort has also gained the support of Paw Street, a charitable organization that helps provide essential services and financial assistance for pets in low-income families. Paw Street has joined the advocacy push to restore 24-hour emergency veterinary care in Evansville or to help develop sustainable alternatives that ease the burden on pet owners and protect animal wellbeing.

The challenges are complex. Veterinary staffing shortages are a national issue. Clinics face financial strain when trying to recruit and retain emergency staff. The Tri-State area lacks nearby alternatives, leaving families with impossible choices during moments of crisis. But the message from the community is clear. Restoring 24-hour emergency care is a matter of necessity and not a matter of convenience.

How The Community Can Help Restore Emergency Vet Access

MinutesMatter is calling on veterinarians, rescues, businesses, community organizations, city leaders, and residents to get involved in any way they can. Sharing stories, spreading awareness, offering resources, and supporting advocacy efforts all help build momentum toward real solutions.

Minutes matter. Lives matter. Our pets matter. Every day without reliable emergency care is another day a family could lose a pet simply because there was nowhere close enough to help.

Anyone interested in getting involved can reach out to Justin at MinutesMatterEVV@gmail.com or visit the Facebook page.
