Indiana City Lands On Most Polluted Air List
A new report from the American Lung Association shows that parts of Indiana are among the most polluted in the country when it comes to air quality.
Indianapolis Lands On Most Polluted List
According to the 2026 State of the Air Report, the Indianapolis-Carmel-Muncie metro area ranked among the worst in the nation for daily particle pollution, a type of pollution made up of tiny particles in the air that can be dangerous to breathe.
The region also ranked among the top metro areas for annual particle pollution, highlighting ongoing concerns about long-term exposure.

Millions Still Breathing Unhealthy Air
The report found tjat 44% of Americans, or more than 152 million people, live in areas with failing grades for ozone and particle pollution.
Even more concerning, nearly half of all children in the U.S. live in counties with unhealthy air quality levels.
Health experts say children, older adults, and people with conditions like asthma or heart disease are especially vulnerable.

Why Air Quality Is Getting Worse
While air quality has improved over the past few decades, the report points to a troubling shift.
Ozone pollution is increasing again, with 129 million people exposed to unhealthy levels, the highest number in six years.
Experts say factors like extreme heat, drought, and wildfire smoke, including smoke from the Canadian wildfires in 2023, are contributing to worsening conditions across the Midwest and beyond.
What It Means For Indiana
For Hoosiers, this report reinforces what many already experience, especially during the warmer months when air quality alerts become more common.
While progress has been made in reducing pollution over time, the findings suggest that those gains may be fragile, and conditions can quickly worsen.
