Overnight Fire Leaves Indiana Crisis Intervention Shelter Seeking Public’s Support
An overnight fire at the crisis intervention shelter run by Albion Fellows Bacon Center, has left the organization in need of assistance from the public.
Serving Victims Since 1981
Albion Fellows Bacon Center has been serving victims of domestic and sexual abuse since first opening its doors in 1981. This organization works tirelessly to help those that need their services but right now, the organization needs our help.
Albion Fellows Bacon Center Shelter Residents Displaced
In a press release Albion Fellows Bacon Center says the fire, which occurred in the overnight hours between Thursday, June 6th and Friday, June 7th, caused damage inside the facility, displacing its residents.
One Member of the Staff Was Treated for Smoke Inhalation
One staff member has been treated for smoke inhalation after heroically putting out the fire and evacuating not only the shelter's residents but their pets who were onsite as well. Officials with Albion Fellows Bacon Center say that all shelter residents have been relocated safely and plans have been enacted to continue providing services.
A New Sprinkler System Prevented the Fire from Spreading Through the Building
Fortunately, the shelter had recently added a new sprinkler system during a recent renovation. They say the new system worked well to contain the fire and prevent if from spreading throughout the building.
The organization had just recently added a sprinkler system during a renovation of the emergency shelter part of the building, with grant funding made available through the Westside Nut Club, the City of Evansville Endowment Fund, and The Brave Heart Foundation. That project had just been completed when the newly installed sprinkler system was called upon last night and successfully contained the fire from spreading throughout the building.
Restoration Work Will Now Begin
The staff and Board of Directors of Albion Fellows Bacon Center are now hard at work as restoration efforts begin in hope of reopening the shelter soon. In the interim, Albion Fellows Bacon Center has partnered with the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Holly’s House, and the YWCA Evansville to continue to provide shelter and crisis intervention services for those who are survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.
Despite the Fire, Services Continue at Albion Fellows Bacon Center
Despite the fire, Albion Fellows Bacon Center will continue to provide mobile advocacy and crisis intervention support services 24/7 and they are working with area partner programs to provide emergency shelter until the Albion Fellows Bacon Center shelter can be reopened.
