It’s Cold in Indiana Now, but What’s the Coldest it’s Ever Been?
I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to be caught up in these weather conditions!
I don't know about you, but I am not a fan of winter weather. The cold temperatures mixed with stinging wind, freezing rain, and snow are something that I dread every year. I'm the type of person who would rather be hot than cold. The cold just hurts. In any event, there is no escaping the cold weather we are about to experience this winter here in Indiana...unless of course, you travel down south for the winter.

As you know, some parts of Indiana are colder than others. Right now, at least in southern Indiana, we are experiencing a lot of freezing cold temperatures. We have had a few days with the temperature in the single digits, with more to come in the next week. However, if you think it's cold now, it's nothing compared to the coldest temperature ever recorded in the Hoosier State.
What's the Coldest it's Ever Been in Indiana?
To answer that question, we have to go back over 30 years ago to January 19, 1994. That morning holds the distinction for many people in central Indiana as the coldest on record. New Whiteland would measure an Indiana state record low temperature of -36 F (-38 C), according to WISHTV. That's entirely too cold! The article goes on to say:
It all started with fresh snow that fell on Jan. 16-17, 1994 which added up to 7.9 inches in Indianapolis. That snowpack would play a crucial role in dropping the temperatures to the extremes they did on Jan. 19.
An arctic high-pressure system moved into the Midwest and combined with calm winds, clear skies, and that fresh snow; radiational cooling took over.
Cities all throughout the state saw some chilling temperatures that day. I don't know about you, but after seeing this, those single digit temperatures we are going to get next week don't seem so bad. So whenever you find yourself complaining about the weather here in Indiana, just remember...it could always be worse!
