Evansville, Indiana, is in the middle of a long cold streak where temperatures have not reached above freezing, but could we break the all-time record?

In case you haven't stepped outside recently. It's cold. Literally freezing! The last time that Evansville has seen temperatures above 32 degrees was on Thursday, January 22nd. Since then, we have seen nothing but below freezing tempatures. Some of those overnight lows have actually been in the negatives. Now, it's currently January 27th. According to the latest seven-day forecast from Eyewitness News, temperatures will continue to be below freezing throughout the rest of the week and into early next week. So, at this point, we are looking at a total of 11 days with constant temperatures below freezing in Evansville...and it could be more!

This cold streak is certainly brutal, especially with the insane amount of snow we have received, but could we be in the middle of a record-breaking cold streak here in Evansville?

What’s the Longest Below-Freezing Streak in Evansville?

In order for Evansville to break the record for the longest streak of continuous below-freezing temperatures ever recorded, we would have to remain below freezing a little over a week past Monday, February 2nd. That's a long time! However, the longest cold streak with temperatures below freezing in Evansville actually began on December 17th, 2000, and lasted a record of 18 days. That's according to Farm Progress. Do you remember that cold streak?

Now look, this is not a record that I would like to see broken. In fact, I am more than ready for a heatwave at this point. It doesn't look like that is in the card for us any time soon. Luckily for us here in Evansville, there's a good chance that we get above the freezing mark (32 degrees) by mid next week, according to Eyewitness News Meteorologist Joe Bird. That being said, we'll be barely above that mark. But we'll see what that pesky groundhog has to say about how much longer this cold winter weather will stick around on Monday!
