I don't care what time of year it is; there is never a bad season to enjoy some chicken wings. Personally, I tend to go for the bone-in or 'traditional' option the majority of the time, but when I don’t feel like getting my hands dirty, I will sometimes opt for the boneless wings. (You’ll get no judgment from me either way.) When it comes to the sauce, I’m a big fan of teriyaki, but mild buffalo and honey barbecue are usually next in the queue.
The Most Popular Wing Sauces in America
Grill Cook Bake has put together a list of the most popular wing sauces by state in an attempt to discover the national favorite. The website conducted a survey of over 2,500 Americans, asking them about their favorite sauce or seasoning, wing type, and whether they’d accompany their choices with ranch or blue cheese. Based on a list of 16 sauces and seasonings, the survey revealed that wing dishes across the U.S. are actually quite diverse.
When it came to the top sauce choice for Americans, there really wasn’t a clear winner. The data revealed that Honey Barbecue was preferred in 14 states, followed by Hot Buffalo Sauce in nine states and Parmesan Garlic in seven states. Things went downhill from there, with Spicy Garlic claiming the top spot in six states, Lemon Pepper in five states, and Sweet Barbecue, also in five states. Teriyaki, Salt & Vinegar, Honey Mustard, and Caribbean Jerk each had one state each.
Indiana's Favorite Chicken Wing Sauce
In a state known for unreasonably oversized fried pork tenderloin sandwiches, I almost would have guessed that Hoosiers might prefer their wings plain or 'naked.' However, that was not the case. Rather, the top wing sauce choice for Hoosiers is none other than Sweet Barbecue. Is it the most unique flavor out there? No, but it’s certainly not bad. Personally, I would have liked to see a Sweet or Spicy Asian-Style Sauce on this list, but either way, I don’t think there is a bad flavor in the bunch.
