There are some pretty odd and controversial foods in Indiana, and apparently, this tops the list.

I'm a pretty picky eater, so there's a lot of food out there that I refuse to eat. That being said, I know that there are some foods that I love to eat that other people think are disgusting. There are a lot of controversial foods out there. You know the ones: you either love them or you hate them.  There's no in between. A prime example would be a Hawaiian Pizza...pineapple on pizza is a big debate. Some of these dishes are more popular in certain states. Quite a few popular state dishes are either hated or loved by locals. Their popularity isn't based on how good they are, but by how much they get people talking.

The team at 24/7 Tempo searched the internet, reviewing local opinions on forums to see what dishes in each state are 'controversial' or 'strange.' It's important to note here that food is completely subjective. Just because someone says a food is bad, that doesn't make it the absolute truth. When it comes to Indiana's most controversial food, it's one that folks here in southern Indiana are no strangers to at all...and believe me, there's A LOT of controversy around it.

Indiana's Most Controversial Food

The first full week in October is the annual West Side Nut Club Fall Festival in Evansville, Indiana. This is the 104th year for the event, where people from all over crowd Franklin Street in Evansville to enjoy some delicious food. The Fall Festival has a wide array of food items available for the festival goers that they normally wouldn't be able to find anywhere else. We are talking about food items such as Pronto Pups, Donut Burgers, Meat Wads, Zombie Burgers, Chicken Fried Bacon, Pig Shots, and more! A lot of strange-sounding names there, right? That doesn't even cover a third of the odd foods. However, it's safe to say that one of the most (if not the most) popular and strange food options they have there is the Brain Sandwich, which is basically fried pork brain on buns with your choice of toppings. You either like them or you refuse to try them.

The brain sandwich also happens to be the most controversial food in Indiana, according to 24/7 Tempo.  Being from southern Indiana, I can confirm that, especially around the time of the Fall Festival, that's the one dish that gets everyone talking in a good or bad way. I tried a brain sandwich once, and that was enough for me. I know that you can get the brain sandwich at several places throughout the state. One place in Evansville that is known for its brain sandwiches is the Hilltop Inn.

There's no doubt that the brain sandwich is quite controversial in Indiana, so I'd say 24/7 Tempo really nailed it with this. The question I have is, what do you think of brain sandwiches? Have you tried them, or do you refuse?

16 Indiana Towns with Dirty-Sounding Names

A majority of these towns were given their names in the mid-to-late 1800s as settlers making their way across the country found unclaimed plots of land and decided to make them their own. While I imagine they thought the names they came up with were innocent, and perhaps a tribute to something in their lives, pop culture has warped our minds to the point since then that we can't help but think of something about the town that was never intended by its founders. Take a look at this list. I guarantee there's at least one name that will make you chuckle.
