The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed an additional six tornadoes across Indiana for 2025, bringing the total number of twisters this year to a staggering number.

Spring and summer are notorious for sparking turbulent storms throughout the Hoosier State, often accompanied by tornadoes. As a kid growing up in rural southern Indiana, I remember a few nights when my family and I hunkered down under mattresses in hallways to avoid such dangers. In March 2025, we experienced two storms that caused similar conditions, and it seems we now know exactly how many twisters touched down.

Six More Tornadoes Confirmed Across Indiana

The first storm hit Indiana on the evening of March 14, and another front swept through the region the following Wednesday, March 19. The National Weather Service has reported that an additional six tornadoes touched down during that second round, bringing the state total for the year to 14. Those tornadoes were mostly EF0s focused around Lake County. However, Bartholomew County did experience an EF2, which left a trail of damage in its wake, according to WISH-TV.

Tornado Statistics in Indiana Through the Years

While 14 tornadoes sounds like a lot, 2025 is thankfully nowhere near the state record. NWS records indicate 2011 was the year Indiana saw the most tornadoes, with a total of 72. The most tornadoes ever recorded in a single month was 42, which happened in June 1990, specifically on June 2. On that day, a total of 37 tornadoes touched down, making it the single deadliest day for tornadoes in Hoosier history. Many people have recalled that day over the years, but let's hope 2025 doesn’t have anything like that in store for us.
