Indiana Roads Ranked #1 in U.S. Despite Potholes and Construction
This might come as a shock to most Hoosiers, but Indiana road quality is the best in the nation, according to a recent study.
Indiana is known as "The Crossroads of America," mainly because the city of Indianapolis is the hub for several major Interstate highways that crisscross the state, connecting Hoosiers to the rest of the United States. Recently, the state of Indiana was named one of the best states in the entire country to drive in. While Indiana is full of roads that offer great scenery and make for a great Sunday drive, we also have a few sketchy roads throughout the state as well. Whether they are very narrow, curvy, crowded with other drivers, or just full of potholes, I'm sure we can all think of a few roads that we tend to try to avoid.
That being said, despite those sketchy roads, potholes, numerous roundabouts, and the construction we constantly see throughout the state, the "Crossroads of America" is home to the best roads in the United States. A recent study from U.S. News & World Report did a study on the states with the best road quality. According to the study, the metric of "Road Quality" reflects the percentage of road miles considered to be in poor condition in each state, according to data from the Federal Highway Administration. Somehow, Indiana took the top spot.

Indiana Leads U.S. in Road Quality Rankings
Indiana has the lowest percentage of road miles considered to be in poor condition, according to the study from U.S. News & World Report. I know, this might come as a bit of a shock to my fellow Hoosiers who drive along roads every day that we consider to be terrible for one reason or another.
While we might have the best road quality in the country, their infrastructure rankings also revealed that Indiana ranks 21st in commute time, 20th in bridge quality, and 45th in public transit usage.
If you still find yourself saying, "There's no way Indiana has the best roads in America," U.S. News & World Report isn't the only reliable source to make that claim in 2025. Earlier this year, a study by Consumer Affairs also revealed that Indiana has the best road quality in the country. So, maybe there's something to the claims.
Are you surprised by these findings? Personally, with the number of potholes, construction, and weird/dangerous intersections I have seen in the state, I thought Indiana would be much lower on this list. However, I am pleasantly surprised by the findings. It's nice to know that our roads aren't nearly as bad as some of the other states. That being said, it makes you wonder, if Indiana's road conditions are the best, what are the other states' like?
