Indiana Now Has the Best Road Contitions in the Country
According to a recent study, Indiana has the best roads in the entire country, and I'm sure most Hoosiers would disagree.
Indiana is known as "The Crossroads of America," mainly because the city of Indianapolis is the hub for several major Interstate highways that crisscross the state, connecting Hoosiers to the rest of the United States. Recently, the state of Indiana was named one of the best states in the entire country to drive in. While Indiana is full of roads that offer great scenery and make for a great Sunday drive, we also have a few sketchy roads throughout the state as well. Whether they are very narrow, curvy, crowded with other drivers, or just full of potholes, I'm sure we can all think of a few roads that we tend to try to avoid.

That being said, despite those sketchy roads and the construction we constantly see throughout the state, the "Crossroads of America" is home to some of the best roads in the United States. The study, by Consumer Affairs, used data from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration to identify the states with the worst roads by analyzing metrics, including rural and urban road roughness and traffic fatalities.
Indiana Has the Best Roads in the United States
Last year, Indiana found itself with the third-best roads in the United States. Now, in 2025, the Hoosier State has the best road conditions in the entire country, according to Consumer Affairs. Here's what the study said about Indiana roads:
The Hoosier State earned the top rank for overall road conditions with a combination of a low rate of traffic fatalities and impressive road quality. Its rural and urban road roughness rank third and second best, respectively. The state also has the seventh-lowest fatality rate in the U.S.
Indiana's great road quality is reflected in its commitment to infrastructure maintenance. In November 2024, the state awarded $139 million in Community Crossings Matching Grants to 223 communities for road and bridge improvements. The Indiana Department of Transportation’s 2024 to 2028 plan also prioritizes upgrades to both urban and rural road networks.

Are you surprised by these findings? Personally, with the number of potholes, construction, and weird/dangerous intersections I have seen in the state, I thought Indiana would be much lower on this list. However, I am pleasantly surprised by the findings. It's nice to know that our roads aren't nearly as bad as some of the other states. That being said, it makes you wonder, if Indiana's road conditions are the best, what are the other states' like?
