Despite the fact that I come from a family of motorcycle riders, I never learned to ride, and I don't own a bike. However, it is something I often think about, so I may end up pulling the trigger sooner or later. Perhaps I'll save it for my midlife crisis down the road? Either way, I think motorcycles are cool, and apparently a lot of other Hoosiers do as well. Indiana is home to some of the most registered motorcycles in the nation, along with a few other fellow Midwestern states.
Are Motorcycles Still Popular?
I started thinking about motorcycles again after recently watching a 2023 film called "The Bikeriders," which was based on a book of the same name. The movie tells the story of a Midwestern motorcycle club in the 1960s called "The Vandals" and stars Tom Hardy alongside Austin Butler. It was a fantastic movie filled with beautiful shots of the Midwest captured in Ohio and Kentucky. The film got me thinking about actual motorcycle culture and if riding is still a popular pastime for those in the Hoosier State.
According to CheapInsurance.com, motorcycles are, in fact, still a popular trend in the Midwest and beyond. The website notes that motorcycle registrations doubled nationwide from 2002 to 2009, totaling about 8.79 million bikes. Since then, registrations have remained largely flat but don't show any signs of decreasing. California currently leads the nation in total ownership, while Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas round out the top five states.
How Many Motorcycles are Registered in Indiana?
CheapInsurance.com notes that Indiana has about 238,729 registered motorcycles, with 348 bikes per 10,000 residents. The Hoosier State now ranks No. 12 in the list of states where people own the most motorcycles, which are much cheaper than cars. Given the affordability aspect coupled with the hefty rush of adrenaline that the bikes provide, it's no surprise Indiana has so many. I see several motorcycles on the road daily, and it always looks like tons of fun.
