Grandma Tries Illinois’ Most Revolting Liquor For The First Time
Some people say you haven't lived in Illinois until you do a shot of Jeppson's Malot. This is true, it's like a rite of passage. I read an interesting quote in a Food & Wine article that compared it to living in Chicago.
It sort of exemplifies who we are as a city. It's rough at first, but you might grow to love it.
No, there's no "growing" to love it, it can't be true.
The taste of Malort is on the extreme side of bitter. I've heard people describe it as a grapefruit-ish flavor. If I were a grapefruit I would be very offended by that comparison.
What does Malort really taste like?
Here are a few things it tastes like (in my opinion).
- PERFUME
I remember playing with perfume spray at a department store when I was a kid and stupidly spraying it into my mouth. Terrible taste, just like Malort.
- BUG REPELLENT
I have accidentally inhaled buy spray more than I am willing to admit. Trust me when I tell you Malort has a similar taste.
"Let me buy you a shot" - Random guy at a dive bar you're visiting for the first time
If any stranger offers you a shot for no apparent reason you need to be careful.
- Make sure you can see it being poured had handled directly to you by the bartender.
- Make sure it isn't Malort.
Also, it is always a man offering up a shot of Malort. I'm not sure why that is but it will inevitably be a male patron.
GRANDMA TRIES MALORT FOR THE FIRS TIME
Jeppson shared a video of someone's Grandma trying the fowl fluid, and her reaction is great.
It took my breath away.
