The Evansville Police Department has announced they are suspending the monthly Coffee with a Cop events effective immediately in an effort to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

The monthly events alternate between the St. Joe Avenue and Washington Avenue Donut Bank locations, as well as Chick-fil-A Crosspoint on Evansville's east side, and give the public the chance to sit down with a member of the police force to discuss whatever is on their mind, whether that's the weather, their favorite sports team, or concerns about activity taking place in their neighborhood.

In a statement released by the Officer Phil Smith Monday morning, the decision to suspend the community gathering program was made "In compliance with the CDC’s recommendations on safeguarding against the COVID-19 virus." The suspension also covers the Department's Chops with Cops, Citizens Academy, ride along program, and participation in neighborhood meetings.

The statement made clear the policy does not apply to "daily patrols and responses to emergency calls" as "The protection of our citizens and their way of life" is the Department's top priority.

We will let you know when these programs are re-instated.
