Evansville City Councilwoman Hosting Law Enforcement Rally May 19th

In honor of National Police Week (May 15th - 21st), Evansville City Councilwoman, Missy Mosby is inviting the public to show our local law enforcement officers we appreciate their service during the first-ever Law Enforcement Rally on Thursday, May 19th in front of the Civic Center.

Like any other sub-culture, police officers in general get a bad wrap due to the actions of a few "bad apples", for lack of a better term. As someone who knows several officers on both the Evansville Police Department and the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department, a few of which I've been friends with since First Grade (30-plus years and counting for those keeping score), I know first-hand they're good people who got into law enforcement to help keep the residents of our community safe.

Unfortunately, with a few officers making headlines for the wrong reasons across the country over the past couple of years, they've all been stereotyped as individuals who think they're above the law that use their position to push around the little guy. And like with stereotypes of any kind, that's not the case.

Which leads to the reason Councilwoman Mosby felt the need to hold the Law Enforcement Rally. When I reached out to her through Facebook for details on the event, she explained the reason behind it, saying, "I just got sick & tired of all (the) negativity and every day seeing an officer murdered, and I want our local LEOs to know we care."

The event will begin at 5:15 p.m. with live music from Sarah Werner, followed by kick off of the rally at 5:30 p.m. Notable members of the community are expected to speak during the event including Fraternal Order of Police President, Michael Sides, and Mayor Lloyd Winnecke who is expected to issue a proclamation. Councilwoman Mosby is encouraging residents who attend to create signs with messages of appreciation for our officers.
