Evansville Announces Cancellation of 2020 ‘Fireworks on the Ohio’

Well I hope you're happy coronavirus, you've found one more way to ruin our summer! The Downtown Evansville Economic Improvement District (I'm just gonna refer to them as Downtown Evansville, it's a lot shorter) just announced that the annual Fireworks on the Ohio celebration has been cancelled this year.

According to the Downtown Evansville Facebook page, the decision was made "out of respect for our sponsors and the health and safety of our entire community." The Fourth of July celebration always attracted big crowds down to the Evansville riverfront. How big? We're talking up to 30,000 people, and that doesn't include the thousands more that would gather in parking lots, garages, parks and yards all through downtown and even to the west side. You would even find spectators camped out on the side of the road along the Lloyd.

Event organizers are already looking ahead to next summer, and invite everyone out to Fireworks on the Ohio on Sunday, July 4, 2021. Read the full statement from Downtown Evansville.

So I guess that means it's up to us now to provide our own fireworks display. Seems like a great thing for all the businesses selling fireworks, but it also makes me kinda nervous about the safety of our friends and neighbors. You know as well I do that NOT everyone should be handling explosive devices. Somewhere in all of our family trees, we probably have a crazy uncle with a total of seven fingers. At the very least we can probably all think of a close call from back in the day. Let's hope I'm wrong about that. Fingers (or finger) crossed.
