Calling all True Crime Fans! 2024 CrimeCon Will be Held in Nashville, TN: Here’s a Sneak Peek of What you can Expect

As far as I can tell, humans have always been fascinated by stories of crime and the people who commit them.  I think about the "why" behind this pretty often because I would love to understand what makes such horrible stories so intriguing. You would think watching as many true crime documentaries as I do would give me nightmares or flip my anxiety into overdrive.

Ever since I can remember I have been interested in stories about individuals who go against the fabric of our society and commit horrible acts against their fellow man. In elementary school, I used to ride my bike to the CJs on Tamarack. I would get a slush puppy, grab a tabloid, and sit and read whatever craziness my parents probably did not want me to know about at that age. I was 10 years old when JonBenet Ramsey was murdered, and that was the first case I was ever obsessed with. I would look for updates every day to follow what investigators found and who the suspects were. Even as a kid, I needed to know why this horrible thing happened, who did it, why, and for justice to be served.

The True Crime Genre has Grown in Popularity

True Crime as a genre of media has absolutely exploded since the late 90s. With televised courtrooms, books searching for serial killer identities, and an infinite number of documentaries to stream and podcasts to listen to we can know every grisly detail of a crime. In a world of fake and fabricated, true crime is real. Even if it's bad and ugly.

What is CrimeCon?

That is why CrimeCon was created. It is a convention where people can go to learn about everything from how the criminal mind works, to the fascinating psychology behind investigative profiling, the science involved in analyzing evidence, and to honor victims and their families seeking justice and peace. Experts from every field associated with true crime are there for lectures and to share their knowledge. People can also meet their favorite podcasters or authors.

Sneak Peek of CrimeCon 2024

Popular local podcasters, Brooklyn Maple and Heather Terry recently went to this year's CrimeCon which was held in Orlando, Florida. Here are some highlights for a sneak peek of what CrimeCon 2024 will be like.

The first thing both ladies shared with me was that even though True Crime is considered entertainment, for them and a lot of us who are interested in the genre, at its core, it is empathy for the victims and their families that motivates us to learn more. Brooklyn put it perfectly, "What sits heavy on my heart is knowing how many missing individuals there are out there and how many families are living each day without knowing what happened to their loved ones." For example, Gabby Petito's parents were there to talk about their daughter and her legacy through the Gabby Petito Foundation.

There was a huge lineup of speakers including Kathy Kleiner who told her moving story about surviving an attack by Ted Bundy.

Former FBI profiler (and silver fox) who solved the Golden State Killer Case, Paul Holes.

and THE Queen herself, Nancy Grace. She told her story about her fiancée’s murder and how it shaped her life. Encouraging her to become a prosecutor, she's been able to put perpetrators behind bars and change lives.

Here they are waiting for the mock interrogation.  Audience members got to choose what questions the detective asked the "suspect." These ladies really know their stuff, so I'm sure they killed it. Sorry, no pun intended.

They got to meet Nancy Grace! She told them they were pretty. I wonder if she will ever be a guest on their podcast.

Of course, when they hit up Podcast Row, they got to meet many of their favorite podcasters.  They have some really fun collaborations with other shows in the works now.
