The debate has raged for years about the separation of Church and State, there have been lawsuits filed against many organizations including the Boy Scouts of America about the use of the word 'God'; with that in mind can a cross become a national monument in this country? Staten Island Representative Michael Grimm wants to make a huge cross found in the rubble of Ground Zero a national monument and he plans to introduce legislation to make that a reality. Grimm says, "this cross was a symbol of hope and freedom at a time when New Yorkers were coping with loss and destruction in the aftermath of the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil".

In July, a group of atheists filed suit to keep the cross from becoming a part of the 9/11 museum and according to Dave Silverman, President of American Atheists, "this was an attack against America, not Christianity. Christianity does not deserve special placement just because the girders look like their religious symbol".

The 'cross' in question is an intact cross beam found in the debris of 6 World Trade Center and is believed to be a cross beam from One World Trade Center. Rep. Grimm also said, " I find it reprehensible that this group would disgrace the beliefs of millions of people in an effort to garner a little media attention for their cause. By establishing the 9/11 Memorial Cross as a national monument, we ensure this symbol of freedom continues to stand for all those we lost and those whose faith remains to this day". Is a cross a symbol of freedom?
