On Saturday, May 5th, in Newburgh, join the family of Davis Collier in honoring her life at the Sunshine in Motion 5K Fun Run hosted by the Warrick County Young Life. The cost is $30 per runner and all proceeds help fund the Warrick Co. Young Life camp scholarship fund making it possible for more area teens to attend summer camp.

Young Life is a international organization that began in the Thirties. According to Kevin Matznick, Warrick County Young Life Area Director,

"Young Life is an outreach Christian ministry for middle school, high school and college-aged students. We are all about building relationships. Our mission is to 'Introduce adolescents to Jesus Christ and help them grow in their faith.' We have volunteer leaders going to schools in Warrick County in hopes of establishing genuine friendships with all types of kids. We hope to tell them about Jesus and continue to love them regardless of their response. We also work on helping kids develop their faith and understand the importance of plugging in to a local church in their community."

And, each year the local Young Life chapters visit the camp. There are dozens of Young Life camps around the US. Matznick went on to tell us,

"Young Life Summer Camps are all over the U.S. (and the world). Young Life owns over 25 resort-style properties in the U.S. in which kids have a chance to attend for 5-7 days over the summer and experience the 'best week of their life.' Campers experience a week unlike any other. They can finally be removed from the craziness of this world and be in a place with other kids from the country just like them to experience things like horse back riding, high ropes courses, hiking, ridge runners, tubing, repelling, frisbee golf, basketball, wiffle ball, and so much more. Also, they get to be in a cabin of kids from their school with their leader unpacking the truth they hear each day at Young Life "club" where a speaker shares the full gospel with them throughout the week. It is a chance to have real conversation for once in our culture today. Electronics removed, distractions away, kids get to see what true relationships look like with friends and their leader. This summer, we are taking kids to Castaway Club in Detroit Lakes, MI, which you can see HERE."

In order to allow more students attend the camp, Young Life of Warrick Co. decided to form a race in her honor.

"The Sunshine in Motion 5k Fun Run was really inspired by Davis Collier's heart for her friends to know Jesus. Davis came to almost all of our Monday night and Wednesday night meetings and her joy and love were so contagious. Wednesday nights are our Bible study night where we meet all together at a house and look through some passages in the Scripture. Davis was always speaking up about how we should love everyone and strive to be a light for Christ in the community. She never met a stranger. She genuinely desired for her friends to know the love that Jesus has to offer and the full life the He promises. She was living it out!

The heart behind this race being in honor of her is that the proceeds from this race will go to our Camp Scholarship fund to help kids in Warrick County attend summer camp if they are not able to afford it. We believe that summer camp is one of the greatest opportunities for kids to come to understand the fullness of the gospel and begin a relationship with Jesus. That is what Davis wanted and so it seemed fitting to have this race be in honor for her as it will help kids experience that Love and that Life that she so desperately wanted them to have.

This race is open to anyone and everyone in the community. We are looking to celebrate Davis and have a gathering of people show up to walk and run together to shed a Light in our community. This is not a "competitive" event whatsoever. We want as many people out on May 5th as possible to join us!"

Registration is at 8:15 AM at the Old Lock and Dam along the Newburgh riverfront. The race begins at 9 AM. Register online at warrickcounty.younglife.org.

Young Life Camp

If a student is looking to find out more about Young Life, they can talk to one of our volunteer leaders. If they don't know one yet, they can email us at warrickcoyl@gmail.com and we will make sure to get them plugged in. Now, to clarify, Young Life is not a "club"....there are no dues, no requirements on attending a meeting or anything like that. We just want to get to know people and let them decide if they enjoy being around and want to get more involved! They can also find more information on our website at warrickcounty.younglife.org.
