As a kid, I can vividly remember shopping at Walmart in Vincennes, Indiana, with my parents. In the early 2000s, there was a McDonald's location in the back of the store, which meant I was treated to a Happy Meal at the end of our shopping excursion. It's been several years since that area of the store was replaced with a Walmart Deli, which I even worked at briefly during my first semester or two of college. However, a remnant of the McDonald's era still remains, as the company's logo is enshrined on one of the electrical panel boxes in the back of the store.
Over the last few years, Walmart has been closing down some in-store fast food restaurants like McDonald's and Subway. In 2021, Walmart removed several McDonald's from inside their stores but announced partnerships with other chains for those locales. It seems Walmart will now be adding another chain to the list, and it's one most folks in the tri-state will easily recognize. The chain in question is none other than Mr. Gatti’s Pizza, which is another childhood favorite of mine.
According to The U.S. Sun, Walmart is launching a partnership with the Texas-based pizza chain to open 92 corporate-owned Mr. Gatti’s Pizza spots in shopping centers across four states. The news outlet noted that the new locations at Walmart will feature a refreshed design along with counter service and seating for customers. The in-store restaurants will serve a variety of Mr. Gatti’s menu items, including pizza, wings, salads, and sandwiches. According to the pizza brand, the partnership will kick off later this year with the launch of 12 units, nearly doubling Mr. Gatti’s Pizza's national footprint.
The states that will soon feature a Mr. Gatti’s Pizza inside select Walmart stores include Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Kentucky. While I'm sad the chain won't be reaching Indiana for this new move yet, it's possible things might change in the near future. CEO of Mr. Gatti’s Jim Phillips, said in the press release that the business could expand its footprint to more US states. In the meantime, Hoosiers can enjoy Mr. Gatti’s Pizza in Martinsville, Clarksville, and, of course, at Gattitown in Evansville.
