Today Is VE Day – What Does VE Stand For?
Today is not a holiday and all government offices, banks and schools are open today, but today is a very special day in our history and for the world for that matter. It was on this day, May 8, 1945 that the Allies officially accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany and the end of Adolph Hitler's rule. Hitler actually committed suicide on April 30, 1945 during the Battle of Berlin. The U.S. officially entered WWll on December 7, 1941 with the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor.
This is a day, although not a holiday, that should remind us of the incredible sacrifices our fighting men and women have made through the years.
The victory on VE Day was celebrated the world over and VE stands for Victory in Europe Day and was a pivotal moment in world history. We are losing more and more veterans of WWll and there are not very many left, but their spirits will never be forgotten.
Even though it's not a holiday we need to remember all of the freedoms we enjoy because of the brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice for us to be free... and how ironic that today is primary election day. So, when you are casting your ballot, give a nod of thanks to all of the men and women that gave you the right to choose.
