While exploring the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, you can see a little old schoolhouse with a cemetery next door.

Ghost Towns Inside The Great Smoky Mountains National Park

When the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was established in 1926 there were people living throughout the park.  Many of these folks moved once the park was established, but some stayed until they passed away. Since there were once people living in this region, there are several historic buildings throughout the park.

According to the National Parks Service (NPS), there are more than 90 historic structures, including homes, barns, churches, schools, and more.   The NPS says that the structures have been preserved throughout the park, and many of them can be explored on self-guided tours.

The best places to see them are at Cades CoveCataloocheeOconaluftee, and along the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. Self-guiding auto tour booklets are available at each place to enhance your visit.

There's also the Ghost Town at Elkmont that is absolutely worth a visit the next time you go to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Recently, I learned about a small one-room schoolhouse nestled within the Smoky Mountains that is said to be haunted.

The Little Greenbrier Schoolhouse

Deep in the Great Smoky Mountains sits an old one-room schoolhouse that was built in 1882.  According to Visit My Smokies, the school operated for residents until 1936.  You can still see the Little Greenbrier Schoolhouse today, and even step inside to see what life was like back then.

Is the Little Greenbrier Schoolhouse Haunted?

Visit My Smokies says that some visitors have reported strange occurrences once inside the schoolhouse:

While exploring the Little Greenbrier School, some visitors have reported hearing footsteps where no one was there. Others have seen glowing orbs floating in the air or flashes of light coming from inside the school or outside in the cemetery. Some people have even claimed to see a figure walking near the windows and doorways or heard voices from people who weren’t there.

Whether you believe the schoolhouse is haunted or not, there's no denying that something is unnerving about seeing an old cemetery right next to a schoolhouse.

The Cemetery Next to the Schoolhouse

When you see the Little Greenbrier Schoolhouse in person, it's hard to miss the large fenced-in area sitting behind it.

This is an old cemetery, with graves dating back to the 1800s.

Visit My Smokies says that the schoolhouse was also used for church services by the local Primitive Baptist congregation.  The church was responsible for the cemetery.
