Salvation Army of Evansville Seeks Volunteers for the Holidays

Bell ringing season is upon us, and the Salvation Army of Evansville needs your help to continue their mission of assisting the most vulnerable in our community.

If you can believe it or not, the holiday season is more or less upon us. Folks have begun their Christmas shopping, and Walmart has all of their holiday decor on full display. (Although, let's face it, if we let Walmart decide when to start putting up decorations, we would be wrapping gifts in July.)

The Christmas season is a busy time for many, but I think it's important to remember to give back whenever we can. Even if you can't give your money, you can always give your time. The Salvation Army of Evansville's red kettle campaign is underway, and if you are feeling the urge to give back to your community this holiday season, then this is for you.

Where Does the Money Collected by Salvation Army Bell Ringers Go?

For over 100 years, the red kettle campaign has been collecting money to help assist those experiencing financial hardships in our community. During the holiday season, the Salvation Army recruits volunteers to man these kettles while ringing a bell and sharing a smile with the folks in our community. This makes a big difference in the lives of people everywhere, including here in Evansville.

"When you ring the bell, even for just an hour, you're helping provide groceries for a family, you're helping provide meals in our soup kitchen Monday through Friday, and you're helping families keep the lights on," said, Alex Rahman, Director of Community Engagement for the The Salvation Army of Evansville.

How Do I Become a Salvation Army Bell Ringer in Evansville?

Rahman added that if one out of every 50 people in our area volunteered for just one hour to ring the bell, the organization would be able to double its number of volunteers from last year, thereby increasing its impact on our community. Luckily, becoming a volunteer bell ringer in Evansville is not too difficult, with online sign-ups just a click away. The job itself is fairly easy and can be a lot of fun.

"I know a lot of people who will get really into it. They will dress up in costumes and have tons of fun with it. It's great, but really, they just need to come with a smiling face and be ready to be a welcoming presence in front of a local store, really spreading the Christmas joy and spirit," Rahman said. "If you can do that, you'll be the best bell ringer out there."
