Firefighters Battle Princeton Church Fire in Harsh Winter Weather
A church in Princeton, Indiana, which had been standing for well over a century, was destroyed in a structure fire on Monday, January 20, as crews battled both fire and ice.
Monday was a somber day for those who attended The Princeton Church, 225 W Emerson St., Princeton, Ind. The Princeton Fire Fighters Union Local 1634 reported on social media that Engine 1 was on a medical call when it was flagged down for a possible structure fire. The building was swept for occupants, and none were found. However, it was later discovered that the attic was completely engulfed in flames. The church had stood in the city for 130 years.
Fire Crews Battle Church Flames for Seven Hours
Over the next several hours, leading into early Tuesday morning, 47 personnel from various agencies were on the scene to assist with the situation. Temperatures were well within the single digits, making for a difficult battle overall. Additionally, there were a couple of minor injuries reported due to the weather conditions, but thankfully, none were severe enough to require medical aid.
"Defensive tactics via deck guns, multiple ladder trucks, and a portable master stream were used to mitigate the fire. Parker Excavating was able to come in and remove a portion of the building to allow better access to hot spots that remained, but there are still some that are inaccessible and left to burn as long as they stay confined within the structure," said the Princeton Fire Fighters Union Local 1634 early Tuesday morning.

Princeton Community Rallies Amid Time of Crisis
As the temperatures were well below freezing, much of the water used to fight the fire ended up freezing on nearby city roads. The City of Princeton Street Department has worked closely with fire crews to help mitigate the buildup, facing another battle of their own. Amidst the chaos, many businesses and community members have donated hot food and beverages for those working in the cold. The Princeton Eagles Club even opened their banquet room as a warming station for all those called to respond. While there is still much work to be done, I think it's wonderful to see so many helping hands in the community.
