KY Shows Support for Ukraine with Special Bridge Light Displays

It's been almost one full week since Russian President Vladimir Putin sent forces into neighboring Ukraine in what appears an attempt to take over the country and once again make it Russian territory like it was in the days of the former Soviet Union. Since the first day of the invasion, the world has watched in horror and concern for the innocent citizens of the country as explosions rock its cities and thousands of Russian troops continue to cross its borders. We've also watched the bravery of many Ukrainian citizens, including their own President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who have chosen to stay and fight instead of fleeing. While the fighting continues, and unfortunately appears that it will for some time, the rest of the world has found ways to show their support for the citizens of Ukraine in their own special way. That includes the City of Owensboro who are using their iconic "Blue Bridge" to do just that.

How the World is Showing Support for Ukraine

With the exception of Putin and I imagine a handful of his advisors, a majority of the world appears to be vehemently against the invasion and are showing their support by displaying the blue and yellow colors of the Ukrainian flag on themselves, or by waving the flag itself during peaceful rallies in their countries. Rallies have, and continue to take place here in the U.S., in Korea, Lithuania, England, Poland, and other locations.

In some cases, like in Owensboro, city officials are using popular monuments or structures their areas are known for to show the Ukrainian people that while we may not be able to be with them physically, or offer support in the form of funding, we are with them in spirit.

The City of Owensboro posted on Facebook Tuesday they will be showing the people of Ukraine they stand with them as they fight the Russian invaders by lighting the Blue Bridge in the colors of the Ukrainian flag every night at 7:00 PM for the next 30 days.

Louisville Showing Their Support as Well

Owensboro isn't the only city in Kentucky to use a well-known structure to display the Ukrainian colors. Over the weekend, Louisville took a similar measure by changing the colors of the lights on the Big Four Bridge connecting Kentucky and Indiana as well as those at Metro Hall where the city's government offices are located.
