Despite feeling out of control, Miranda Lambert's got no regrets in her new song "Mess With My Head." The rock-meets-pop track features a melody straight out of Keith Urban's playbook; press play above to listen.

"I had the palace lookin' nice and neat / Two feather pillows with expensive sheets / Sittin' so pretty on my velvet couch / Before you came around," Lambert sings to open "Mess With My Head." Squealing guitars and a trippy melody swirl around her as she sings, "Maybe it's wrong, but it feels right to me ... If it ain't love, then I like it better than before."

Lambert co-wrote "Mess With My Head" with Luke Dick and Natalie Hemby. In an email to fans, she calls the song "a departure from anything that I’ve done before."

"It has a real rock edge. Part of that comes from my co-writers ... and the other part of that comes from spending time in New York City," Lambert explains. The country star has been spending more time in the Big Apple because her husband, Brendan McLoughlin, is a NYPD officer, and, Lambert adds, "Being there has put a new energy into my music and my writing.”

"Mess With My Head" is the third song that Lambert has shared from her forthcoming new album. In mid-July, Lambert dropped the record's first single, "It All Comes Out in the Wash." Prior to that, however, in early June, she debuted the song "Locomotive" live at CMA Fest 2019.

“I would call it old Miranda, but a Miranda at a whole new level, if that makes any sense," Lambert says of the project as a whole. "I made a career on being a rock 'n' roller, and I think fans are going to hear that throughout. And yeah, there is this vibe of being happy that goes through this album. I am really, really happy.”

One major career change confirmed by Lambert is her switch from longtime producer Frank Liddell to Jay Joyce, the go-to collaborator for Eric Church and Ashley McBryde, among others. Lambert and Joyce recorded the project at his Neon Cross studio in East Nashville.

"It was a change, but I wanted to go in a different direction for this one than I have in the past because I feel like I was in a new place," Lambert says. "Jay and I had some new chemistry. Sometimes you have to change it up."

Lambert has not yet announced further details of her new album, which will be her seventh major-label studio record. However, she has previously said that she expects to release the still-unnamed project this fall.
