Mayor Winnecke Officially Opens New Section of Greenway Passage
Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, alongside Parks Department Executive Director Brian Holtz, City Engineer Brent Schmitt and Deputy Mayor Steve Schaefer officially opened the newest section of the city-wide walking and bike path during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday morning.
The new 2.5 mile stretch, named the "Hi-Rail Greenway" begins at the corner of East Riverside Drive and Gilbert Avenue, one block west of Highway 41 and runs north to Walnut Street.
The path is the latest edition to the ongoing Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage project and joins previously completed stretches including the starting point at the Pigeon Creek Canoe Launch on north Heidelbach that winds around Garvin Park, under First Avenue, and behind Cedar Hall Elementary before connecting with the Evansville riverfront. The ultimate goal of the project is for the passage to completely encircle the city.
