Hidden Waterfalls in the Bluegrass State

I don't know what it is, but there's just something magical about finding a waterfall in the forest.  Now typically when I think of waterfalls, my mind goes right to Niagra Falls or the mountains, so the Bluegrass State isn't usually at the top of my mind when I think of waterfalls.  However, Kentucky is home to several sizeable waterfalls and many smaller waterfalls as well. There is a database online that keeps track of all the waterfalls in the state of Kentucky, and currently, there are more than 1,000 waterfalls in that database.  If you're interested, you can find that information, here.

A Rare Double Waterfall

Recently I learned that Kentucky is home to something that's actually pretty rare, a double waterfall.  It's exactly what it sounds like, two waterfalls that cascade into the same plunge pool (Thanks to National Geographic for teaching me what a plunge pool is).

The Pine Island Double Falls

The Pine Island Double Falls is located inside the Daniel Boone National Forest.  If you want to visit this double waterfall, you'll have to hike a 1.4-mile trail, but the view at the end of your hike will be absolutely worth it!

Explore Kentucky Wildlands has this to say about the double falls:

Within the Daniel Boone National Forest lies a rare double waterfall, Pine Island Double Falls, where two powerful blue cascades meet in the middle and plunge into a pristine aquamarine pool below. You can access this impressive hidden gem via a 1.4-mile trek that follows a creek and features numerous natural wonders, such as caves, gorges, canyons and rock formations. As with most waterfalls, the best time to visit is right after a heavy rainfall.

Explore Kentucky Wildlands has the GPS coordinates for the falls and information on how to pick the perfect time to visit the waterfalls, you can find all of that information here.
