A study found the pizza habits of several U.S. cities, and one Kentucky city sits at the bottom of the list for pizza popularity.

Pizza is one of those foods I like to call "the great unifier."  Pizza is the perfect go-to if you're ever feeding a large group of people and want something that will be a hit with just about everyone.   There are so many different types of pizzas, different sauce options, and different toppings that there's something for everyone in the pizza world.  Recently a study was conducted that answered the hard-hitting pizza questions, including the worst places to enjoy a pizza in the United States.

Kentucky Ranks in the Bottom 10

List With Clever did a massive study on pizza trends across the United States, and using the methodology below, they ranked the best and worst places to enjoy pizza from across the country.

Clever Real Estate compared the 50 largest metro areas in America by population using multiple metrics with different weights to determine the best pizza cities:

• Reputation score: The results from a poll of 1,000 Americans asked to name which cities they consider to be the top five for pizza in the country (32%)

• Pizza restaurants per 100,000 residents (20%)

• Pizza Passion score: Local Google search volume for pizza-related terms (20%)

• Average Yelp rating for local pizza restaurants (12%)

• Local price of a large cheese pizza (4%)

• Cost to buy a large cheese pizza each week as a percentage of median annual income (4%)

• Local price of a large pepperoni pizza (4%)

• Cost to buy a large pepperoni pizza each week as a percentage of median annual income (4%)

Louisville, Kentucky is Among the 10 Worst Cities for Pizza

Among the bottom 10 cities, there's everywhere from Memphis, to San Antonio, to Cincinnati. Closer to the Tri-State, our friends in Louisville, Kentucky came in at number number 9.  so while Louisville did crack the top 10, it only just barely got there. So why was Louisville ranked so low?

Why Lousiville was Ranked So Low

The parameters for this study found that there are about 10.2 pizza restaurants per every 100,000 people in Louisville. Clever Real Estate also found that the average Yelp review of pizza restaurants gave a 3.8.   These ratings aren't too shabby, however, what really did Louisville in was the low pizza passion score.  Louisville only got a 1.78 for pizza passion, when the top markets got anywhere from 82+.  What is a pizza passion score?

So there you have it.  You can see Clever Real Estate's full study, here.  Of course as with all things, I think we can take this study with a grain of salt.  I'm sure there are plenty of delicious pizza places in the Louisville area. My suggestion is to ask a local when you visit the area, and they'll point you in the direction of the best pizza.

Louisville Ranks the Best for Sicilian Pizza

While overall the pizza score was not in Louisville's favor, the study found that Louisville was the best city if you wanted to enjoy a Sicilian Pizza. According to Pizza Today a Sicillian-style pizza is typically made with a thick spongy type of dough, made into a rectangular shape and cut into square slices.
