If you enjoy canned coffee, you need to check your cans, because there has been a massive recall.

Canned Coffee

As we've seen cold brew and iced coffee products skyrocket in popularity over the last couple of decades, we've also seen many turning to convenient coffee products like canned coffee.  Now these are not the coffee grounds that come in a can, these are actual cans of coffee that you chill in your fridge before drinking. Hundreds of different canned coffee products have recently been recalled due to a risk of botulism.

What is Botulism?

According to the CDC, botulism is a rare, but very serious illness that's caused by a toxin made by Clostridium botulinum.  The key points about botulism from the CDC are as follows:

Botulism is a rare but serious illness.

It is caused by a toxin that attacks the body’s nerves and causes difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and even death.

The toxin is made by Clostridium botulinum and related bacteria.

There are five main kinds of botulism. All are medical emergencies.

It's important to know the signs and symptoms of botulism, and you can find those through the CDC here.  The CDC says that since botulism is an emergency, if some or all of these symptoms are experienced then it is important to seek medical attention immediately.

Hundreds of Canned Coffee Products Recalled

According to the FDA the recall was issued by Snapchill LLC, which manufactures canned coffee products because their current process could lead to the toxin that causes botulism.

06/17/2024, Snapchill LLC (Snapchill) of Green Bay, WI is voluntarily recalling all canned coffee products manufactured by the company, within expiration date, because their current process could lead to the growth and production of the deadly toxin, botulinum toxin, in low acid canned foods. Botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms. Symptoms can begin from six hours to two weeks after eating food that contains botulinum toxin. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.

What Products Are Recalled?

The products were distributed nationwide through various coffee roasters and retail locations and online purchases through Snapchill.  The products under the recall are sold in a variety of roaster and brand names in metal can sizes that range from 7 oz to 12 oz.  The FDA says that the words "produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC" will be under the nutrition facts.

When checking the product list, hundreds of brands are a part of this recall.  The FDA has a full list of recalled brands, which you can see here.
