How Planners Can Save Your Life This Year
How to Make Your Year a Little Easier on Yourself
If you’re anything like me, your brain is running at about 100 miles per minute at all times. I’m constantly thinking about what I need to do, how long it’s going to take, and what I can squeeze in next. To keep myself motivated, I’ve learned to build in small rewards — like telling myself, “If I get my work done and the house cleaned, I can go for a long walk or treat myself to my favorite snack.” Little things matter.
One simple habit that’s already transforming my 2026? Planners. And yes, plural.
I kid you not, I have a planner for cleaning, cooking, monthly plans, yearly goals… you name it. For me, writing things down is the only way my brain fully accepts that something needs to get done. If I don’t write it down, my mind will absolutely let it slip.
There’s also something really satisfying about checking things off a list. It gives you a small sense of hope — like, okay, this list does end eventually. I write down everything from groceries I need to buy to what I plan on cooking with those groceries. I keep work tasks and home tasks separate, which helps my brain stay organized and not feel overwhelmed.
Locked In With Planners
I also live with ADHD, and planners help me “lock in” and focus on what actually matters. If something is important enough to write down, then it’s important enough to follow through on. I even use an ADHD-friendly cleaning planner that breaks things down into manageable steps so I don’t feel frozen by the mess.
Back when I worked in news, staying organized was non-negotiable. If I wasn't organized something would get messed up. I had to keep track of equipment, keys, laptops basically everything. It got to the point where I’d leave sticky notes on my desk and on the door reminding me to double-check before heading out. And honestly? There’s no shame in that.
Organized, Self Care, Or Both
Writing things down, making lists, using planners — it’s not overkill. It’s self-care. It’s how you keep your life feeling a little less cluttered and a little more manageable.
Now I’m curious, do you have a method for staying organized that I didn’t mention? How do you keep track of everything in your busy schedule?
Sometimes, the simplest tools make the biggest difference.
