Kentucky’s Grocery Bills Are Among the Highest in the Nation
If your grocery bill has you doing a double-take at the checkout lately, you’re definitely not alone. It feels like every trip to the store costs more than the last one, even when you swear you bought the same stuff. Eggs, milk, bread, a few things for dinner, somehow it adds up to a small fortune. It's a serious budgeting challenge for many families around here. And when you look at the numbers, it turns out there’s a reason it feels so tough.
WalletHub Study Highlights Grocery Cost Struggles
If it feels like your grocery bill has quietly turned into one of your biggest monthly expenses, you’re not imagining it. Food prices have jumped nearly 30% over the past five years, and for many families, that weekly trip to the store is starting to sting. Now, a new report from personal-finance site WalletHub is breaking down exactly where Americans are feeling it most, looking at how much of each state’s income is going straight into the grocery cart. The results paint a pretty eye-opening picture of just how tough it’s gotten to keep the pantry stocked.
States Feeling the Biggest Grocery Burden
Before we get into where Kentucky landed, it helps to see the bigger picture of how grocery costs stack up across the country. WalletHub’s latest study looked at the price of 26 everyday grocery items, from meat and dairy to produce and pantry staples, in all 50 states, then compared the total cost to each state’s median household income to see where groceries take the biggest bite out of paychecks.
The result? At the top of the list, residents in Mississippi spend the largest share of their income on groceries, followed by West Virginia, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Rounding out the top five is another state in the South that’s been feeling the squeeze at the checkout more than most.

Kentucky Lands in the Top Five
Now for Kentucky. The Bluegrass State comes in at #5 overall, meaning residents here spend one of the highest shares of their income on groceries in the entire country. On average, a typical basket of groceries costs about $123.11, which works out to 2.37% of the median monthly household income. Some everyday staples are ranking higher than others, too. Kentucky is 5th for the average price of ground beef and 10th for potatoes. Eggs come in at 18th, while items like sugar (21st), corn flakes (28th), and dishwashing detergent (27th) fall closer to the middle of the pack. Altogether, it adds up to Kentucky families feeling more pressure at checkout than most states nationwide.
State-By-State Breakdown
If you’ve been walking out of the grocery store lately, wondering how you spent that much on just a few bags, you’re definitely not alone. For a lot of Kentucky families, the math just isn’t mathing anymore, and this study shows there’s a real reason it feels that way. Are you feeling the pinch?
