Although you will sometimes find me at Dunkin' at 5 AM headed to the studio, my favorite place to get my caffeine fix is a local coffee shop. You could close your eyes and point to any of the establishments on this list and have a lovely experience. From tasty pastries to rich and wonderful drinks, you won't be disappointed.

Niko's Bakery & Cafe

Niko's Bakery & Cafe is a little piece of heaven located in Wesleyan Park Plaza at 601 Emory Drive. Not only do they have incredible homemade breads and pastries, their breakfast, lunch, and take-and-bake dinner options are so creative and always a home run in the taste department. I love that they use local produce and meats from Cecil's and Hillview Farms just to name a couple. They also brew Calhoun-based Mylke coffee and have a full menu of tasty drinks.

Gramp's Coffee and Donuts

Gramp's Coffee and Donuts is the coolest little shop right on the corner of 4th and Frederica St. I have had dreams about that case of mouth-watering cronuts! They love to have fun with different flavor combinations for their treats. As much as I love these amazing sweets, I love their coffee even more. You'll often find creative specialty drinks listed on the counter with clever names, but even their regular drip coffee is 10 out of 10. Plus, they always have a great playlist going, and if you're lucky, you'll get to meet Gramps himself.

Red Swing Coffee

Red Swing Coffee now has two locations to serve you. One downtown at 112 Allen St. and another on the west side at 2803 W. Parrish Ave. Other than their awesome brews, they are famous for their scratch-made cupcakes and bubble waffles loaded with toppings. Their west side location now has room to host events like birthdays or showers.

Windy Hollow Biscuit House

Windy Hollow Biscuit House at 630 Emory Drive is a favorite weekend brunch spot for the Maddox fam. Four words. Cinnamon Roll Bread Pudding. We love that breakfast buffet and the service is always amazing. Chad and I also meet them once a month to treat a local non-profit to Bunches of Lunches catered by the Biscuit House. Did you know that they also have a specialty coffee bar? So you can enjoy while you eat their good ole southern home cooking or stop in during the morning drive time and grab an iced coffee, frappe, espresso, or smoothie drink.

Kahawa Java Shop

Kahawa Java Shop is a beautiful space full of light at 2601 W. Parrish Ave. The dynamic mother-daughter duo Ticy and Ayanna have created the perfect place to foster not only a love for their delicious drinks and pastries but connection in the community. They want the modern and cozy decor to be welcoming and inspire people to gather and spend quality time conversing with a good cup of coffee.   You can order online and pick up any of these seasonal signature drinks or one of their other delightful flavors. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear even loves him some Kahawa Java!

The Creme Coffee House

The Creme Coffee House is a downtown staple at 109 E. 2nd Street and with a mobile coffee truck. They have a unique menu with tons of variety when it comes to baked goods and drinks of all kinds.  Of course, they are known for their amazing coffee options. I also love the eclectic decor and local artwork that covers the exposed brick walls. They update their menu each season, so there is always something new and tasty to try. Check out their coffee flight for a good date night or girl's day out!

The Spot Coffee & Finery

The Spot Coffee & Finery is located at 2815 Veach Rd. and they also have an awesome coffee bus that you can find around town at community events. My favorite thing about The Spot, other than their organic fair-trade coffee and yummy baked goods, is that they support local art in a big way. It covers the walls and shelves in the shop providing unique eclectic decor that you can purchase and enjoy in your own home. They also host poetry nights and shows with live music from local bands. My husband, Michael, has played there many times. The Spot folks are also supporters of live theatre having sponsored shows at T.W.O. I really appreciate everything they do for creatives here in Owensboro. I also appreciate their Big Yeti drink!

Travelin' Tom's Coffee Truck

Travelin' Tom's Coffee Truck is a mobile coffee bus that is new to Owensboro. I first tried them at the Owensboro Christmas Parade, and their drinks are really great, but what stood out most to me was how kind the folks slinging the coffee were. Give them a follow on Facebook to see where they set up around town. You can also book the truck for weddings, parties, and other private events.

Libertalia Coffee

Libertalia in Wesleyan Park Plaza is the only spot in town if you are looking for a FIRE bagel sandwich. It is a whole vibe in there! They do salads, smoothies, acai bowls, and more. As we've learned over the past two years, they even slay the burger game. The Libertalia coffee truck is always the first stop I make when I visit the Owensboro Farmer's Market.

Overflow Cafe

Overflow Cafe-  3232 Villa Pt has been serving up local goodness on the east side for over a decade. You can stop in before work or throughout the day for a pick me up and their chicken salad sandwich is legendary! If you don't do coffee, try a chiller or a smoothie or zip through the drive-thru and enjoy one of their baked goods.

As someone who grew up in family-owned small businesses, supporting local shops is super important to me. When you shop at a business that is owned by someone you know, you are helping support their dreams. Buying local means more of your money stays in the community. Local businesses often support other local businesses, so the love is reciprocated.  Also, that means you are getting the freshest, highest-quality ingredients that are grown or made in the Owensboro area.

Which local coffee shop do you visit regularly? Do you have a favorite drink? Please help me decide my next order, and send me a message on the WBKR App.

LOOK: How Halloween has changed in the past 100 years

Stacker compiled a list of ways that Halloween has changed over the last 100 years, from how we celebrate it on the day to the costumes we wear trick-or-treating. We’ve included events, inventions, and trends that changed the ways that Halloween was celebrated over time. Many of these traditions were phased out over time. But just like fake blood in a carpet, every bit of Halloween’s history left an impression we can see traces of today.
