Why I Added Local Honey to My Diet

Recently, I decided to take an audit of my diet and realized I’ve been eating too much processed food. So I started an overhaul, beginning with breakfast. I wanted to up my daily fiber intake, and two things I’m trying to eat more of are chia seeds and ground flax.

These ingredients are a great start, but they can be pretty bland. I wanted something to give it a little zing and a fresh, local feel, so I decided to add some local honey.

Local honey tends to be richer with a more complex flavor profile. It’s small-batch, closer to hive-to-jar than grocery shelf blends, less processed, and buying it supports local beekeepers.

My absolute favorite honey was the lavender honey I had at the Alii Kula Lavender Farm in Maui. On a warm scone with some lavender coffee, the flavors were out of this world.

Raw Honey vs. Commercial Honey

Many local honey producers also offer raw honey. Both raw and commercial honey are mostly sugar, but raw honey is lightly strained to remove debris, not heated to high temps, and often made in small batches without mixing.

Raw honey can vary in color, sometimes cloudy or opaque. Its consistency can differ from jar to jar, and it may crystallize faster. The flavor is more complex and depends on the local blooms the bees visited. Commercial honey, on the other hand, is usually heated, filtered, and blended for consistency, which makes it smooth and predictable but less unique in flavor.
