Happiness is one of those slippery things. Some days it’s a hot coffee and a parking spot that isn’t the size of a shoebox. Other days, it’s remembering you can choose joy, even when the headlines scream “record-high economic uncertainty.” A recent WalletHub survey reminds us that while happiness is partly about our mindset, it’s also shaped by where we live.

WalletHub looked at all 50 states, ranking them across 30 factors like emotional well-being, work environment, and community vibes. The result? Hawaii takes the crown as the happiest state in America. (Apparently, endless sunshine and ocean views do help.) Rounding out the top five were Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

Where Illinois Lands

So, how about us? Illinois cracked the list at #22, just behind North Dakota and just ahead of some pretty big names like Texas and Arizona. Our neighbors in Wisconsin weren’t far ahead, sitting at #20. Not top 10, but hey—we’re in the upper half, and that’s worth a small celebratory deep-dish.

The rankings show us that joy isn’t just about zip codes, it’s about perspective. Sure, Hawaii might have beaches, but Illinois has four seasons, lakefront cities, and the power of Midwestern grit. Happiness is less about where we rank and more about how we live each day.

So, Illinois… is this our best life? Maybe not yet. But it’s still ours to shape, and that’s something to smile about.
