Native Plants That Help Bring Hummingbirds To Your Yard
Hummingbirds are making their way back through Indiana and Kentucky right now, and over the next few months, they'll be some of the busiest visitors in backyards across the Tri-State.
Hummingbirds Are Returning To The Region
According to Purdue University, the ruby-throated hummingbird is the only species that nests in Indiana. These small, but fast-moving birds typically arrive around mid-April after migrating north from their wintering grounds.
They'll stay throughout the summer, with some beginning their fall migration as early as late July.

It's Not Just About Nectar
There's a common assumption that hummingbirds live on nectar alone, but that's only part of the picture.
They also rely heavily on insects for protein, sometimes consuming up to 2,000 insects a day. That means a hummingbird-friendly yard isn't just about flowers (or plastic hangers filled with sugar water). It's about creating a space that supports a healthy mix of plant life and insects.

This kind of habitat actually already exists in many neighborhoods. It just takes a few intentional additions to make it more inviting.
