If you’re noticing smoke in parts of western Kentucky today, there’s a reason behind it.

Officials with Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area say crews are conducting a prescribed burn on April 1, 2026, covering approximately 468 acres across multiple locations.

Where The Prescribed Burn Is Happening

The controlled burn is taking place in several areas within Land Between the Lakes, including:

  • Barnes Hollow
  • Cravens Bay
  • Demumbers Bay
  • Duncan Bay
  • Pisgah Bay
  • Smith Bay

These burns are carefully planned and monitored as part of ongoing land management efforts.

Why Prescribed Burns Are Used

Prescribed burns, sometimes called controlled burns, are a common tool used to maintain healthy ecosystems.

In this case, they say the goal is to keep open fields from being overtaken by trees and invasive plant species. Fire helps restore natural balance, supports native habitats, and reduces excess vegetation that could fuel more dangerous wildfires later.

Where Smoke Could Travel Today

According to officials, smoke from today’s burn is expected to move northeast, potentially impacting areas near Princeton, Kentucky, and surrounding communities.

That means residents may notice hazy conditions or the smell of smoke throughout the day.

What You Should Know About Air Quality

While prescribed burns are controlled, smoke can still affect air quality, especially for those with respiratory conditions.

Officials recommend checking current air conditions through AirNow, which provides real-time updates and health guidance related to smoke exposure.

If you’re sensitive to smoke, it may be a good idea to limit time outdoors while conditions are impacted.
