Indiana’s Most Misspelled Word for 2026 Might Surprise You

We all have those words that we still struggle to spell, and according to new data, folks in Indiana can't remember how to spell one word more than others...and it's one that we use all of the time.

Back in elementary school, we had spelling tests every week. I can remember having to write each word down ten to twenty times a piece so that I could learn how to spell it correctly for the tests. These tests ended after elementary school, but I think that we should have had spelling tests all the way through high school because there are still some words that we have trouble spelling. For me, there are a few words that I struggle with, but the one that sticks out is "vacuum."  I don't know why, but it's always a word that I misspell all of the time. My phone likes to remind me of that all the time when sending a text. Nowadays, we have spell check and auto-correct on our phones to tell us that we have misspelled a word. We rely on these tools way too much, and all of us can acknowledge that we have some words that we either speak into our phones when texting or rely on our phones to auto-correct.

Look, everyone has certain words that we have trouble spelling. Nobody is immune to that. It's just...some words are easier to spell than others, in general. A recent study has revealed the most misspelled word in each state. The research, conducted by Unscramblerer.com, used data from Google Trends between January 1, 2026, and May 18, 2026, for "How do you spell" and "How to spell". to determine each state's most mispelled word. Funny enough, this data was revealed a few days before the National Spelling Bee, which is on May 26 and May 28.

The Most Mispelled Words in the United States for 2026

Before we get into Indiana's most misspelled word, let's take a look at the most mispelled word in the United States. Funny enough, Indiana's word is not a word among the United States' top 10 most misspelled words. Those words are as follows:

1. Bougie - 134 400 searches.

2. Favorite - 128 400 searches.

3. Through - 127 200 searches.

4. Business - 123 600 searches.

5. Tomorrow - 121 200 searches.

6. Because - 106 800 searches.

7. Definitely - 104 400 searches.

8. Beautiful - 102 000 searches.

9. Niece - 100 800 searches.

10. Separate - 98 400 searches.

Indiana's Most Mispelled Word in 2026

Last year, Indiana's most misspelled word was "taught." I could understand the confusion some folks might have about that word. However, Indiana's most misspelled word for 2026 has me scratching my head a little. Even more so because it was one of the 10 most misspelled in America. According to the report, data from Google Trends for searches like "How do you spell" and "How to spell" in Indiana reveal that the word Hoosiers struggle to spell the most is "because."

I'm trying to wrap my head around this. Why do Hoosiers overall struggle with spelling the word because? Perhaps we just got so used to texting in shorthand and spelling "cuz" or "bcuz." I don't know. However, what I do know is that you can easily bring together two smaller words to create Indiana's most misspelled word. Just put together the words "be" and "cause," and there you have it. But hey, I'm not here to judge. I struggle with spelling several words myself. What about you?
