Smithsonian Magazine recently named the best small towns to visit across the U.S. and one Southern Indiana town made the list.

There's something quaint and cozy about the feel of a small town.  That's why many of us like to take vacations or weekend trips to cabins in remote locations. It's a way to escape the hustle and bustle of the daily grind.  Every year Smithsonian Magazine highlights the best of small towns from all across the United States.  As Smithsonian says, small towns truly make up the heart of America.  These are places where the community will come together to celebrate the history of the area, and where many families live and work, and have done so for generations.

Smithsonian Magazine just released its list of the 15 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2024.  All of the towns on the list have less than 25,000 residents, and the small town from Indiana that made the list has less than 7,000 residents.

Southern Indiana Town Named One of the 15 Best to Visit in the Nation

A charming small town usually has a quaint downtown area, thriving local businesses, delicious local food, and a passion for the town's history. When you visit Huntingburg, Indiana you'll find all of the above. For this reason, this little town is listed among the best small towns in the country to visit. 

Of course, all eyes will be on Huntingburg in August, when the Big League Baseball Classic comes to town and former MLB legends come to play at historic League Stadium.  League Stadium gained notoriety in the early 90s when it was featured as the home field for the Rockford Peaches in A League of Their Own.

Another reason Huntingburg was named among the best small towns in the United States by Smithsonian has to do with the quaint downtown.

Huntingburg’s picturesque downtown is a historic district of two-story Italianate and late Victorian commercial buildings that center around Fourth Street, the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare. It’s home to an impressive collection of antique stores, specialty shops and eateries: places like Downtown Emporium, featuring multiple vendors who stock everything from vintage toys to Longaberger baskets, and My Little Soap Shop, where you can fill up on bath bombs and even paint your own pottery in the evenings.

Huntingburg usually has a lot going on, and often hosts stroll-style events in the downtown area.  Huntingburg is also home to a unique brewery, Yard Goat which serves up the viral dill pickle pizza (and speaking from experience, it's delicious)!
