Indiana Joins List of States with the Most Dollar General Stores
Indiana has an almost ridiculous amount of Dollar General stores, making it one of the states with the most locations in the United States—at least for now.
I'm an avid Dollar General shopper and have been for most of my life. Sure, most of the stores are poorly stocked, messy, and the self-checkout is always broken, but it still comes in clutch when you need it. I live in a rural area, and having one just two minutes from my house has been a blessing on multiple occasions. However, it looks like these stores are going through some changes you may want to be aware of, especially if you shop at your chosen location regularly.
Dollar General to Close Several Stores in 2025
Indiana has the 12th most Dollar General locations in the United States, which has some fans worried following the chain's most recent news. According to USA Today, the retail chain is undergoing a "store portfolio optimization review" with plans to close 96 Dollar General stores and 45 Popshelf stores during the first quarter of 2025. While that sounds like a lot, there is no need to panic. That number of closures represents less than 1% of their store base, with more openings happening this year than closings.

Which States Have the Most Dollar General Locations?
As of January 2025, Indiana has a total of 695 Dollar General stores, and believe it or not, that's actually fewer than some of our neighbors. Kentucky checks in at No. 9 on the list with the most locations at 751, and Illinois is at No. 11 with 698. The state with the most is actually Texas, with an astounding 1,889 stores. In total, the chain has about 20,000 locations, but I'm sure many more will pop up in a few remote cornfields before long.
