Illinois’ Cheapest Place to Live? It’s Also One of the Safest
This is a win-win no matter how you look at it. Did you know that a city in Illinois that was just named the cheapest place in the state also happens to be one of the safest? For once, here's some good news for the Land of Lincoln.
This brand new top 10 ranking was just shared on Christmas Eve by Homesnacks. They crunched some numbers and spit out the cheapest places you can live in Illinois. At the top of their list is a town that resides in the south-central part of the state.
What is the cheapest place to live in Illinois?
Homesnacks calls Mattoon the "pinnacle of affordability" and with these numbers, it's easy to see why:
- Median Income: $45,953
- Median Home Price: $102,983
- Median Rent: $740
But, wait, there's more. It gets better for Mattoon as City Data says it has a crime rate 1.4 times lower than the national average.
City Data also says "In the last 5 years Mattoon has seen decreasing violent crime and decline of property crime." It's actually a quaint little Illinois town.
No town is perfect and crime is still higher than 72% of other American cities, but it's not common these days when you hear about a place in Illinois referred to as "safe". Let's accept this as the good news it is. Mattoon is a town in Illinois that can be considered both cheap and safe and that's a great combination.
