Evansville's existing smoking ordinance could get a lot tighter as a result of an ordinance that will be introduced to the City Council tonight. Both sides will be represented tonight by representatives of Casino Aztar and the local Smoke Free initiative. At odds is the issue of exemptions and whether or not bars, restaurants and casinos should be exempt as some are now. The good folks who operate businesses where smoking is permitted in designated areas fear that a total ban would effectively kill their business.

Others argue that because smokers only account for a little more than 20-percent of the city population, a total ban on smoking would only increase business and bring in many more who would not have otherwise chosen to go there.

Either way, this issue is going to be a battle regardless of where you come down on the issue. Whether or not it will be one way or the other is still yet to bee seen. The amendment being introduced tonight contains no exemptions.
