Evansville, Indiana, ranked third among cities with the lowest cost of living in the country. Are you surprised?

It's not a secret that the cost of living is high and going up. Inflation has caused so many things to be more expensive than it has ever been in the past. It makes it hard to pay your bills, buy groceries, and fill up your gas tank when everything is getting more pricey, but your paycheck remains the same. If you are looking to settle down in an area where you will have the best chance to not be so tight on money, Indiana is home to the city with the third-lowest cost of living in America.

How Does Evansville Rank So High?

Of course, Niche couldn't just say that Evansville ranks so high without revealing its methodology for its findings. Here's what criteria go into ranking the cities with the lowest cost of living, according to Niche:

This grade takes into account key factors, including a location’s housing, food, and fuel costs, as well as the median tax rates, in an attempt to measure the overall affordability and relative cost of living of an area.

Now, I know you might be like me and you want to see the numbers behind Evansville's ranking. When looking at Evansville, Niche reports the Median Home Value in Evansville is $129,100. That is below the national value of $303,400. However, when it comes to food, fuel costs, and median tax rates, there's no data shown. That being said, looking into the cost of living for Evansville, the website, Apartments.com, did give us some data that could help back up Niche's claim. Here are a few data points for the cost of living in Evansville:

  • Groceries: $1,302 per month, which is 5.3% lower than the US average.
  • Housing: $1,685 per month, which is 27.7% lower than the US average.
  • Utilities: $885 per month, which is 5.1% higher than the US average.
  • Transportation: $803 per month, which is 2.1% lower than the US average.
  • Healthcare: $424 per month, which is 5.2% higher than the US average.
  • Goods & Services: $2,795 per month, which is 4.6% higher than the US average.

So, while the costs that we feel the sting from the most are above the national average, Evansville is below the national average in the data points that Niche used for their ranking. While it might come as a surprise, it appears that the data isn't lying. Honestly, it's quite refreshing to know that, while it might not feel like it at times, we have it way better than other cities when it comes to the cost of living. Evansville is a great place to live, overall, with plenty of things to offer residents. We should all be proud that the city found itself ranked so high on a list like this.

Oh, and Evansville wasn't the only Indiana city to rank highly on Niche's list. South Bend and Fort Wayne both ranked among the top ten cities with the lowest cost of living in the country. You can check out the list by clicking here to learn more.
