In the past few weeks, we fostered and then adopted a new puppy. He's awfully cute and hungry all the time. We also have a 13-year-old dog who is as sweet as he can possibly be. I love spoiling my doggos rotten and I love cooking and baking. The problem is - we hardly ever eat sweets so my cookies go uneaten. So, this week, I found a fun recipe that my daughter and I made together for the dogs. They loved them.

I knew I had to find a poultry-free recipe since my big dog is allergic to all birds. If you have a younger dog, do yourself a favor and start switching up the protein regularly to avoid this! It's a complete pain in the butt. I knew this one would be a little sweet because of the peanut butter and the pumpkin is really good for their digestion.

Doggie Approved Christmas Cookies

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup pumpkin puree (I used canned)
  • 2/3 cup peanut butter
  • 2 cups flour (I used whole wheat)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Spray pan with olive or coconut oil and preheat oven to 300 degrees F.
  2. Combine pumpkin and peanut butter. Mix til smooth.
  3. Slowly add in flour and mix til crumbly.
  4. Knead mixture with hands on a floured surface until you form a ball. This might take a while as it's pretty crumbly.
  5. Roll the dough out to a quarter of an inch thickness.
  6. Using cookie cutters, cut out shapes and place cookies on baking sheet. Alternatively, you can roll small cookies into quarter or half dollar size balls and squish down to form more of a cookie shape. Dogs don't really care about Christmas cookie shapes!
  7. I had to take the cookie dough scraps, reform into a ball and roll out three more times to use up all the dough.
  8. Bake for 30 minutes.
